Hair dashboard
Purpose
Hair It All is a Dashboard that was designed to showcase the data of hair all around the world. This was created to both help other people recognize the global community of hair and explore other hair type struggles, benefits, habits, and commonalities.
Why
When we think of hair we don’t think about the commonalities or differences of everyone else’s hair. We usually just hope the style we try that we saw on social media turns out good, or that our hair looks tamed, or that there is just hair on our head or some of us don’t even care at all. I get asked about my hair a lot and it made me realize how uneducated people are about different types of hair. This data helps to find the similarities, differences, trends, and averages of hair among the world’s population. Hair is a very complex topic that is affected by genes, age, environment, and personal preferences. This dashboard helps to track some of those connections and understand the world of hair.
Design reasoning
The design for the dashboard was done in a way to feel conversational, relaxing, and casual so anyone and everyone is able to understand it. It’s not your conventional dashboard, but that is because it brings information that people don’t usually take a dive into. The soft neutral tones of pink give it an easy aesthetic while the grid layout provides an easy read. The information in the pages was also laid out to tell a story. The story about hair.
Characteristic
This first page shows the general data about characteristics of hair such as colour, length, thickness, and density. I not only displayed data about the hair but I also included information about uncommon topics such as hair density and hair thickness. This gives a general overview of what hair all over the world is like. I chose to do trending colours rather than the most common natural hair colours because hair colour is something people play around with very fluidly. It is strongly about people's preferences. Whether it is permanent or temporary they are able to revert, change and alter the colour of their hair much easier than any other characteristic. Because it is so easy to change and we are easily influenced by social media, I chose to do trendy colours instead.
Wash day
The next page I decided to design shows data about wash days. This consists of what days people decide to wash their hair on the most, the typical styles they choose, common products used, and how long wash routines last. This page was designed to make the user feel like they are going through a wash routine themself. The main topics needed for wash day are displayed on this page. Kind of like the world is washing their hair together. I chose a lot of visuals for this page because we use a lot of physical products. Since products are a very important part of our hair routine, I felt it was important to show the top four.
Styling
I chose to design the hairstyling page because styling our hair is something a lot of us struggle with. It is how we show our personalities through our hair. Styling varies across the world and seeing the trends and common methods shows how others do their styles. This page shows what styles and tools dominate and may even help someone to select what tools to buy fr themself. Adding in the lost bobby pins, beads and scrunchies was a must when it comes to styling. Those are some of the common things that people get frustrated with when trying to style their hair. I created that section so users can relate to that simple frustration.
Hair issues
Hair can be a lot of people’s insecurity. They can be ashamed of a hair mistake they made, be dissatisfied with their hair due to genetics, or even feel like they are the only ones who is struggling with their hair. I created this page to help people understand that hair issues are very common and make them realize that is it easy for some and very difficult for others. For example, people who suffer from hair loss may feel so embarrassed and alone. This data can change someone’s perspective on what normal is and realize that they are not alone in struggling with a lot of these issues. I started at the top by showing what damages hair the most to kind of educate people about the risks of altering your hair using heat or chemicals. Lower down I specified some of the issues that people suffer with.
